Sri Lankan world record breaking spin magician and top wicket holder of the cricket world Muthiah Muralitharan always supposed to be the national icon of Sri Lankan people. On 23 August He will feted by Tamil Union Cricket & Athletic Club, at the Cinnamon Grand, Colombo in a mega event taking shape in the form of a sit down dinner. The event titled ‘Golden Oval Ovation to Murali’ an idea conceived by his club committee is all set to become a reality Muralidaran for his achievements and contribution towards Sri Lankan cricket.

The Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club which has been in existence since 1899 has been inextricably linked with the heritage of cricket in Sri Lanka.

The journey which began from a school nestled by the banks of the Mahaweli River, has taken the champion spinner to heights never imagined hitherto. A proud son of St. Anthony’s College Katugastota – a premier Catholic educational institute, Murali rewrote inter school cricket record books prior to his arrival at the Colombo Oval.

Many had their hand in grabbing the exciting prospect. However it is learnt that Damien Nadarajah, a former Antonian cricket captain was the prime mover in ensuring that Murali reached Tamil Union safe and clear. According to club sources Murali had stayed with an uncle of his at Kotahena for almost ten years till he constructed his own house and remained faithful to his club although there had been lucrative offers.

The event come Sunday would feature a conceptualized form of a dinner theater. The panel discussion would feature past and current cricketing greats with the audience too be given the opportunity of taking part.

The main attraction of the felicitation is expected to be a pleasant surprise for Murali and the organizers are tight lipped on as to what is in store. The participants would receive an invaluable complementary collector’s item.
